The fourth series in the Star Trek saga, Voyager
was set in the same time period as Deep Space Nine.
Unlike other Trek series, the ship in this one was
relatively small, with a full crew complement of
around 150. Originally in the vicinity of Deep
Space Nine chasing a Maquis terrorist ship, Voyager
was caught in a freak plasma storm and hurled so
far away (75,000 light years) that it would take
75 years to get home. The Maquis ship, caught in
the storm with them, was destroyed soon after,
and its crew joined the Voyager crew in
an uneasy alliance.

The biggest challenge for Kathryn Janeway,
Voyager's Captain, was keeping her commingled
crew working together while trying to get them
back to a familiar part of the galaxy. Chakotay,
captain of the Maquis ship, was a solid Native
American whom Janeway appointed First Officer of
the combined crew. Others in the crew were Paris,
an outgoing former fighter pilot with a zest for
life and a tendency to get into trouble; Kim, a
rookie out of Starfleet Academy not sure of his
ability to live up to his own expectations;
Torres, a moody, half Klingon half-human from
the Maquis ship who preferred her human side;
and Tuvok, a Vulcan who had been on the Maquis
ship as a Federation spy and was now, along
with Janeway, keeper of the peace.

Voyager's medical needs were met by the Doctor,
an emergency medical program in the ship's
computer that was, through holographic projection,
able to assume solid physical form to treat the
injured and sick. Despite being a computer
program, the Doctor did have a personality,
albeit one of cynicism and impatience with the
shortcomings of the crew's biological members.
Neelix, one of the first aliens encountered by
Voyager in this uncharted part of the galaxy,
was a charming character looking for adventure
who joined the crew as chef, handyman, and
resident philosopher. With Neelix came Kes, his
beautiful Ocampan lover, who worked with the
Doctor to learn medical techniques.

Kes left the series in the fall of 1997. At this
same time Janeway tried to integrate Seven of
Nine into the crew, a Borg.
