Frank was a freewheeling, divorced contractor who had impetuously
married widowed beautician Carol when they met during separate
vacations in Jamaica. They flew home to Port Washington, Wisconsin,
where they both lived, told their kids--his three and her three--and
all the problems of a merged family began. She was orderly, he
was chaotic. The kids eyed each other suspiciously. Hers were
teenager Dana, as compulsively neat as her mom, middle sis
Karen, a budding fashion plate, and young worrier Mark. Frank's
were teenage J.T., a cool customer, preteen Al, into insects and
animals, and carefree Brendan. Working with Carol in her beauty
salon next door were her mother Ivy and sister Penny. Cody was
Frank's spaced-out 19-year-old nephew, whose nutty schemes
and obsessions kept everyone in an uproar but who
was really smarter than he seemed.

By the fourth season the oldest kids were approaching adulthood: Dana
entered college, and J.T. was working as a car salesman. In may 1995, Carol
gave birth to the couple's first child together, Lilly. Lilly grew rapidly,
turning five and entering preschool in 1997. Other stories concerned the
kids' growing pains, their exploits, and numerous girlfriends and boyfriends.

In the fall of 1997 the series moved to CBS, and Carol decided to goto
college, finding herself in the same classes as her freshman daughter Karen.
