For young people coming home from a Friday night date,
or for those who were still up after The Tonight Show,
The Midnight Special provided 90 minutes of taped in-
concert popular music. The emphasis was on rock and,
when the series began, there was no regular host.
Among the popular stars who hosted the show were:
Johnny Rivers, Mac Davis, Paul Anka, Lou Rawls,
Ray Charles, Chubby Checker (pictuered below),
Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis, Curtis Mayfield,
David Bowie, and Charlie Rich. It was Helen Reddy,
the hostess of the premier telecast, however,
who finally became permanent host in July 1975.
Less than a year later she gave up that role
and weekly guest hosts returned.
