Cast: Liberace George Liberace and Orchestra Flamboyant pianist "Lee" Liberace (real name: Wlasziu
Valentino Liberace) appeared frequently on television
during the 1950s and 1960s. His trademarks were always
the same, and always the butt of inumerable jokes: the
outlandish and very expensive wardrobe, the curly hair
and pearly-tooth smile, and a florid piano style. Atop
his Steinway was always perched an ornate candelabra.
Women, especially older ones, loved it. The critics
were not kind, but Liberace did not mind,
he laughed all the way to the bank.
Liberace's first television exposure was on a local
program in Los Angeles in 1951, followed by a 15-minute
network summer series on NBC in 1952. The following year
he began a syndicated series (filmed 1953-1955) that
received extremely wide circulation. The films were
rerun for years. With him was violinist brother
George, who led the orchestra.
Later programs included an ABC daytime series in 1958-
1959, and a network summer show on CBS in 1969. In later
years Liberace concentrated on personal appearances,
especially in Las Vegas, where he entertained a
loyal, if aging, following. Click on the image above to purchase The Liberace Show on DVD!
