Format One, a.k.a. Jeff's Collie (1954-1957):
The story of eleven-year-old Jeff Miller who lives on a
small farm outside the town of Calverton with his widowed
mother and grandfather. After the death of a neighbor,
Jeff inherits a beautiful collie named Lassie.
Stories depict the world of love and adventure
shared by a boy and his dog.

Format Two, a.k.a. Lassie and Timmy (1957-1964):
A seven-year-old boy, Timmy, runs away from an orphanage.
Found by Lassie, he is taken to the Miller farm and given
a temporary home. That fall Gramps dies suddenly and
Ellen Miller found that she and Jeff were unable to
properly run the farm alone, so she sells it to Paul and
Ruth Martin, a childless couple who later adopt Timmy.
Unable to take Lassie to the city with them, Jeff leaves
her to the care of her new master, Timmy. Stories
again depict the adventures of a boy and his dog.

Format Three (1964-1968):
The need for American farmers overseas prompts Paul
to sell the farm and move to Austrailia. Unable to take
Lassie because of quarantine laws, she is left in the
care of an elderly friend, Cully. Shortly thereafter,
Cully is stricken by a heart attack. Sensing the situation,
Lassie brings help in the form of Corey Stuart, a forest
ranger. Recovering, but unable to properly care for Lassie,
Cully presents her to Corey. Bound to a new master, Lassie
assists Corey, protecting the forests and aiding both
animals and humans in distress.

Format Four (1968-1972):
No longer bound to a human master, Lassie roams
California and assists those she finds in distress.
The show leaves CBS in the fall of 1971 and
moves to first-run syndiaction.

Format Five (1972-1974):
Though still somewhat of a wanderer, Lassie finds a
home at the California ranch of Keith Holden. Stories
depict her adventures in and around the ranch.

The one constant through all the various formats
was Lassie, a brave, loyal, and remarkably intelligent
collie. Lassie was always alert, ready to help her
masters and protect them from evil and adversity.
In fact, her heroics were often incredible--leading
lost persons to safety, warning of all sorts of
impending disasters, and tending the sick.

ABC brought Lassie back in an animated version,
Lassie's Rescue Rangers, which ran on
weekend mornings 1973-1975.

48 episodes of The New Lassie were made for
first-run syndication 1989-1991.
