One of the needs of any man in high political
office is someone to organize social functions
and serve as first lady. For Governor William
Drinkwater, the chief executive of a small
Midwestern state, and a widower, that some-
one was his attractive 23-year-old daughter.
Despite the problems caused by their
generation gap, J.J. served her father as a
charming and effecient first lady. Bright and
opinionated, she was always willing to debate
issues, and possessed the uncanny knack for
getting her father into and out of political
hot water. She also had a regular job as an
assistant currator at a zoo. It may also
explain her foundness for a stray basset hound
that she brought into the family and named
Guv. Around the executive mansion she sought
and received assistance from the governor's
secretary Maggie, his press secretary
George, and the housekeeper Sara.
