A feisty, over-weight housekeeper, aptly named Nell,
helps a recently widowed police captain, Carl Kanisky,
raise his three daughters: Katie, Julie, and Samantha.
Set in Glen Lawn, California, Nell becomes a surrogate
mother to the clan. Frequently seen were dopey Officer
Simpson and Nell's best friend, Addy. In 1983 six-year-
old Joey Donovan joined the household. He was cute
as a button, but quite the junior-grade hustler.
Julie married Jonathan Maxwell at the end of the 1984-
1985 season. The 1985-1986 season opened with the
death of the chief. In 1986, with the girls grown or
in college, Nell moved to New York City with Addy,
Grandpa, and little Joey. There Joey's little brother,
Matthew, joined the household.Gimme a Break!
Nell Carter, who played the stout, sassy housekeeper
on the 1980s sitcom "Gimme a Break!" and won a Tony
Award in 1978 for her sultry turn in the Broadway
musical "Ain't Misbehavin'," died January 23, 2003
at age 54. Blessed with a big voice and strong stage
presence despite her 4-foot-11 height, the heavyset
Carter prided herself on her range as a performer,
doing musicals and drama as well as comedy.
