The most famous gamblers in the country are converging
on the Western town of Sweetwater for a high-stakes poker
game to be held at that august establishment, the Red Ox
Saloon. Joe Dakota will be there. Monte Ralston. The Delta
Fox. But the main attraction at this game is Bret Maverick.
The jaunty, silver-tongued gambler is "20 years older, 40
years wiser" and still has a few tricks up his sleeve, along
with a four-barrel derringer. Not that he likes to use it.
In fact, Maverick is thinking of settling down in Sweetwater.
Maybe. That prospect seems to appeal to Mary Lou Springer,
the pretty reporter-photographer who keeps trying to get a
good shot of Maverick with her unwieldy camera. She hardly
ever succeeds. "I don't like photographs of myself,"
Maverick says.

Set in the late 1880s, Maverick owned a ranch outside Sweetwater
and was part owner of the Red Ox Saloon in town. Cranky, Irritable
Cy Whittaker was the caretaker at the Lazy Ace, Bret's ranch,
and former sheriff Tom Guthrie was his partner in the saloon.
Guthrie, an old-fashioned lawman, had recently lost the
sheriff's election to young, ambitious Mitchell Dowd, who
struggled to bring "civilization" to Sweetwater with the
marginal help of his stupid deputy, Sturgess. Feisty Mary Lou
Springer ran the local newspaper, the Territorian, with the
help of her mother and young printer's apprentice, Rodney Catlow.
Also seen regularly were the local banker, Elijah Crow, who was
not above stretching the law to his advantage; Shifty Delgrado,
the house dealer at the Red Ox who cheated at cards whenever he
thought he could get away with it; and Philo Sandine, a self-
styled Indian scout who was more small-time con man than
anything else. The actor playing the bartender at the
Red Ox was James Garner's brother, Jack.
